# Aquanzo

> Aquanzo cultivates Artemia (brine shrimp) on food-industry by-products in AI-controlled tanks on land, producing a reliable marine ingredient for aquaculture feed with nothing taken from the sea.

Aquanzo Ltd was founded in 2022 and is headquartered at the University of St Andrews, Scotland.

## What Aquanzo does

- Grows Artemia, a small marine crustacean that 99% of marine hatcheries rely on as live feed, in closed recirculating tanks on land.
- Feeds the Artemia on nutrient-rich liquid by-products from dairies, breweries and distilleries, such as salty whey and permeate, that would otherwise be a disposal cost.
- Places its units beside the by-product producers, so the feedstock does not need to be transported.
- Monitors every tank with in-house computer vision and sensors that count, size and track the Artemia and guide production day and night.
- Runs a breeding programme, founded with the Roslin Institute, to select Artemia for production on land.

## Why it matters

- Most Artemia cysts come from a few salt lakes; the Great Salt Lake, which supplies around 45% of them, has lost 73% of its water.
- Wild fish catch has not grown since the 1990s, and krill harvests are capped.
- Cultivating Artemia indoors uses an estimated 0.15 m² of land per kg of protein per year, more than 200 times less than farmed fish and more than 10,000 times less than beef.
